Happened to be watching the Discovery Channel last night, and found they were showing several episodes of a series entitled "Mythbusters" in which a couple of effects engineers tested out the physical possibilites of urban legends. (They've got a site at http://www.m5industries.com/ ) These included the Chevy Impala + JATO (using a radio controlled car on a LARGE dry lakebed and a helicopter to follow... nope, it didn't take off but it DID outrun the helicopter for a few seconds there. :->)

Other stories inspected:
Eating poppyseed bagels can cause false positives on drug tests. This proved to be true - and they were still getting them the next day so if you work in a job that requires drug testing, don't eat them. Ever. (Or document it and sue the company for a blortload of cash...)

A woman got stuck to an airline toilet due to suction and had to be pried off upon landing. Proved very unlikely - how they did this is positively hysterical.

A laywer took a running jump to bounce off a highrise window once too often, went right through it, and plunged 24 stories to his death. True (see http://darwinawards.com/darwin/darwin1996-01.html). And not even particularly unlikely so long as you remember to keep the center of mass high and allow for the "stack effect" whereby pressure inside the building tends to be a bit higher than that outside. Took them awhile to work this out, but when they did twas pretty spectacular.

Being covered with gold paint is not Good for You. True.

Too much soda and pop rocks will explode your stomach. False. Tested with a pig's stomach. If you really PUSH it you can get one to explode but it takes serious effort. (You may not want to watch this one too closely. :->)

Other efforts included exploding biscuit dough (could happen - if you left the tin in the car long enough on a really hot day), the celebrated (and quite true) case of the lawn chair elevated into the sky by helium balloons (and BOY is that much helium expensive), and other things like that there. Well worth the watching (not to mention frequently flat out hilarious) if you get the chance.
