And one more small earthquake, this one a 3.0 located a few blocks west of the last two and about a km deeper. Reported in Did You Feel It?, and also  found the UGS earthquake/fault map and have been playing with it - here's what they show for those three quakes.  (Including that the two announced at the same spot weren't, quite, but after all this whole segment is about 3-4,000 feet across at most.)  The blue circle on the lower right is the first, the orange in the middle the second, and the white one the other side of Lincoln Blvd is the third.

And I should really stop playing with the maps and go grocery shopping.  Out of area readers please do not View with Alarm - this happens a lot (though usually further away than I can feel it.)

The closest I've been to experiencing an earthquake was when the Hercules Blasting Powder plant, on the opposite side of Birmingham, blew up. We heard it AND felt a good jolt. Having it just keep on for awhile must take it to another level of "unsettling."

The real kicker to the above memory? Before I-59 was finished, my route to the University took me right past their front gate. Yeep!

At this distance, there's no time to spread out, so these have been pretty abrupt - the equivalent of having somebody back into the loading dock a bit too fast, when you're in the other end of the building. Not that much different in intensity from someone hitting the dip out front that the DWP stuck us with three years ago. Maybe a bit stronger than the double sonic boom we used to get from shuttles coming into Edwards AFB when they couldn't land at the Cape for some reason. Less distinctive, though.

Not viewing with alarm, but with concern. I've got family in SoCal.

Got any in the northeastern US, or the east coast? They actually get more trouble from things like hurricanes (which we don't get), blizzards and the like. I think everybody gets floods, but ours aren't that bad as long as people have the sense to stay OUT of the channels. Earthquakes are a bigger danger in areas where they don't happen often enough for people to make and heed proper building codes (the last time we had a building collapse in an earthquake (1994) it was not to code, and practically on top of the epicenter. There were a freeway bridge and some parking garages as well - codes were as usual updated, we did a lot of retrofitting, the usual) But it's a lot easier to deal with than hurricanes, blizzards, tornadoes, heavy winters, floods and the other endemic disasters of other parts of the country. (Ok, we get floods too, though they're usually contained.)
