That was fun! Just got back from seeing Return of the King with Nicolai - this was the second time I'd gone. Anyway, Peter Jackson has created a classic. He even managed to end where the book ends with Sam's return home. Little Elanor is cute!

Other things I liked included Legolas vs the Mammoth (and Gimli's comment at the end), the army of the dead (how often are THOSE on the side of the good guys?), the death of the Witch King (Go Eowyn and Merry!), Merry and Pippin dancing at the Helms Deep victory celebration or greeting the party at Isengard - heck, Merry and Pippin period.

I think the rest of this is general enough - the visuals were stunning, as in the previous installments. And despite the fact that I haven't seen most of the illustrations in more recent editions of LOTR (I've got the Ballantine paperbacks, plus the Red Book single-volume with slipcover) which were done by the done by the same designer, I found a lot of places looked like I'd visualized them, including Minas Morgul and Minas Tirith. People too to a certain extent.

There are a few things I wish hadn't been altered/left out (like the explanation of Denethor's madness and the exact manner of his death - he deserved a bit more dignity than he got) but on the whole I liked even the changes. And I suspect some of what I'd like to see (like a bit of the romance of Eowyn and Faramir) will be in the extended version - I just hope that now there isn't another installment to bring up excitement for we may get to see it sometime before next December.

Well done, Peter Jackson & co!
