As I said in the comments, it is one or the other - ads or subscription. If I run for free, I accept ads as the price for a free site. If I pay upfront, then I'm paying for an ad-free site. Forcing ads on me whether I pay or not, I'll have zero reason to have an annual subscription anymore.
