Just to show that everything happens at once, just as I finally get into the ending portion of a Beetle Bomp screen I've been fighting with for days, we get this earthquake. We KEEP getting this earthquake. Won the screen anyway, whilst holding onto the laptop with the hand not using the trackball. Meanwhile, on TV the History Channel is telling us about Bruce Lee. Snicker....

Don't see any sign of the quake on line yet; USGS Earthquake hazards hasn't picked it up yet. With luck it was local - it was long enough that I'm a mite concerned about any place closer to it if it was not. But it kept rolling for quite awhile, and I'm downstairs so it's not the wood frame undulating after the fact. Ah well, off to check CalTech...

OK, CalTech had it in their media info section, and USGS has it now, so I just filled out their "did you feel it" form. Comments section: Wheeee! :)

Oh - current estimate is a 5.0 in the Hawthorne area, followed by a 3.1 elsewhere in the Hawthorne area. Right down the road a piece.

5.0, apparently (http://www.data.scec.org/recenteqs/Maps/118-34.html) - yeah, I'm 20 minutes late with this. I was watching video on-demand, and BoyZilla, when I called for him to come to me right now, freakin' dawdled. NGAH!!! Glad ya'll are okay.

We're fine. The thing was 11 or so kilometers deep, so most of the distance it had to come was vertical and not through people's neighborhoods. In case you posted this first, I just updated my post from what I found out from CalTech, and USGS now that they've got it up.

Now CalTech is reporting the magnitude as 4.7 on the TV update. Pictures of a damaged mini-mall in Long Beach. LAX and Long Beach airports were temporarily closed to check for runway cracks and things, but I gather they're back up again.

I still recall the 1971 quake (don't remember its epicenter) waking me from a deep sleep at dawn. And I mean wide-awake in an instant. Corner-group on casters. Wheeeee!

Similar. I attended USC at the time. I didn't have an early class for a change and had been hoping to sleep in.... There followed a day of aftershocks and profs eying the ceiling with a "did I get that wrong?" expression on their faces.

I might not have been too far away, if I'd gone in to school, as I was a student/subject at the Los Angeles Child Guidance Clinic at the time. Who knows? Depending on your major, we may have met and don't recall it. :D

I was a biology major, which at the undergrad level was basically pre-med. Too much cutting open of things, too little figuring out what things did and why. Once I had my BS, I went on to computer science instead.
