Wheee, just had an earthquake. No idea how big yet - I should probably get off here and go look elsewhere. Anyway, all OK here. Didn't even faze the bored dog next door who is still howling mournfully, same as he was before.

Whew - 5.8, fortunately for me out the other side of town. Here for details. Now that's a fast reaction. Must bookmark this site.

Thanks. There's been an update to the linked site - current estimate of the size is 5.4. Given that Richter's is a logarythmic scale, that's significantly smaller but of course it still shook things up a lot. Thus far I've heard of a few minor injuries and some damage. I checked out the Google Earth reference and it looks like the epicenter was out by Chino Hills, under a batch of housing developments. The "did you feel it" statistics map of people reporting where they were and what happened is filling out nicely.

What did they say? The most excitement I've heard of thus far was a friend 7 miles away in an office with a batch of Chicagoans. She was fine, but highly amused by their reactions.

A bit of film of folks gathering outside on open spaces, and a report saying it was 5.4, while the annotation said 5.8...

It was originally announced as 5.6, then 5.8, finally 5.4. Which is the number Cal Tech came up with so I suspect it'll stick.

ABC News, which has been running lots of earthquake coverage mentioned a recycling center which had had a lot of dust and gunk accumulating overhead for years which all got shaken down to where they could sweep it up. Which just goes to show that there's a use for everything. :)

Don't recall. Presumably fairly near the epicenter. There was a brick wall in Pomona that demonstrated why you don't build with bricks out here (leastwise not without a lotta rebar).

We got a bunch of excited people down here in San Diego (Poway) where I work. Most of the new people haven't felt a quake before. Nothing major, but we got definite movement for about 5 seconds, swaying plants, that sort of thing. Fairly strong for being so far away.

That is rather impressive. Here (Marina del Rey), it was strong enough for me to start to shut down the computer just in case it got worse (in fact I was about to the last step, turning off the power strip when it stopped.)

It made the 11pm news here in TN. they said it was felt as far away as Vegas. Here's a couple of good pages for keepin' up with the latest quakes
