Today, a conversation about the 47 Ronin reminded me that while I know the story, I hadn't the foggiest exactly where the whole thing took place (well, other than Edo and environs). A quick google led me to Sengaku-ji Temple where the 47 are buried, and a site with lots of pictures of the place (including the well where they washed the head). This site also has the briefest account I've ever seen of the whole thing - for much longer one see the Wikipedia entry. The exact details are probably long lost to time, but most of the versions I've encountered have at least the same structure as this one. I also recommend Inagaki's classic movie on the subject, Chūshingura.
